The future of augmented journalism

I've been a party to a fair bit of discussion recently about artificial intelligence (AI). Most of it seems to be about AI in manufacturing and urban contexts, and there seems not to be much in the context of publishing. Therefore, i was surprised when I came across this article which puts AI into the context of the media.

Report: How artificial intelligence will impact journalism

Two visions for the future of media

This article made me think about the future of journalism, especially since it mentioned the Financial Times Group, a former employer in the Middle East and owner of the newswire service, Mergermarket, which I headed up in MENA. Journalism cannot survive on charity; a loyal customer base is necessary and the most profitable way for an owner is for the publication (digital or hard copy) to be subscription based. What will be the media's future?

What it is like as a woman in Saudi Arabia

After having lived in the UAE for some years I’m frequently asked if it is hard for women. It wasn’t. No, it is not like Saudi Arabia. Women do not have to be fully covered- although it can help if you do. They have to be modestly dressed though. And they don’t have to deal with the restrictions that they do in Saudi Arabia.

Independence had better happen before Brexit, if at all

Like many people, I've been keeping an eye as to what will happen with Brexit. I admit to having a vested interest, with a house outside central London, in Turnham Green. The exchange rate between the New Zealand dollar and the British pound has fallen astronomically - from 3.5 in the pounds heyday to 1.75 now. What a difference? What does this say about Brexit, if at all? Is it any wonder if the Scots vote for independence and to stay in the EU? But it is all about the timing. And how to get it right?

Trump won’t allow you to use iPads or laptops on certain airlines. Here’s why

Today, a ban was imposed on travelers carrying laptops and other large electronic items as cabin luggage on direct flights into America and the UK, mainly on airlines from the Gulf Arab countries. This is an interesting, but not unexpected, development. After having covered the aviation sector in the Middle East for a number of years (while at Khaleej Times and then Mergermarket) this ban is probably a long time coming.

White, Irish and Undocumented

Most Most Any
Any debate about illegal immigrants in America often focuses on black and Mexican illegals. But there are many Irish who are illegal too, but they have the benefit of being white. This article, that first appeared in CNN, highlights some of the challenges that  Irish immigrants are facing.

The Anti-Cairo

I came across this article today and it fascinated me. What? Building another city to rival Cairo?  How is this possible? What is the government up to? I had so many questions and didn't really understand what's happening. Maybe you will too. Here is the article

Donald Trump is a "true friend" of Saudi, says Deputy Crown Prince

We know the animosity between Iran and Saudi Arabia, Shia versus Sunni. This article that appeared in the UK"s Independent newspaper the other day illustrates how wide the hatred between the two countries has become- or is the "cosiness" between Saudi Arabia and the USA?

Trump declares war on grammar

This story made me laugh. Since it appeared in the "Evening Harold" I take it, it's tongue n' cheek. It's well said though.

Factor investing will not dumb down the craft of investing

This article crossed my desk the other day. It was sent by one of the author's, Amin Rajan. in it, Rajan and Pascal Blanqué explain the blurry distinction between passive and active investing. The article first appeared in The Financial Times.

“Truth is rarely pure and never simple,” cautioned Oscar Wilde, the 19th- century playwright. The advice is worth heeding in the current seemingly black and white debate on active versus passive investing. It ignores the rise of a third way, factor investing, that is blurring old demarcations.

Bernie Sanders' Speech on Israel

This article first appeared in Haaretz on February 28th. It's worth the read.

Bernie Sanders' Speech on Israel, Trump and anti-Semitism at J Street Conference

Thank you for inviting me to address you here today. It’s a pleasure to be here with J Street, which has been such a strong voice for saner, more progressive foreign policy ideas. And I am delighted to be in the company of friends from the Middle East and all over the world who I know will continue the struggle for a world of peace, justice and environmental sanity.

How to hunt a lone wolf

Anti-Muslim rhetoric is increasing all the time and much of it is a result of "lone wolf" attacks. Often these attacks are the result of people acting alone but whom ISIS has approached later in the day. They then claim the attacks as their own. This article is from Brookings Institute.

Four more journalists get felony charges after covering inauguration unrest

It would appear that America is no longer the country of the "free", with immigration being curbed and a ban on Muslim immigrants in particular, and a crackdown on the media. No longer can journalists say what they know to be true; it is clearly better to present "alternative facts".
