NZ Superfund CEO wins Business Achievement Award

It’s good to know that the organisation for New Zealand’s Techweek ‘17, which will run from 6-14 May 2017 is moving ahead. A week of events bringing together bright minds to tackle global issues with local ingenuity. Head to Techweek‘17 to meet like-minded people, discover new opportunities, and learn about the latest and most exciting technologies that are changing the shape of the near future, according to Techweek’s website.

Techweek forms part of New Zealand’s burgeoning entrepreneurial and technology sectors. This will certainly help the private equity industry and venture capital industries in New Zealand, which are small.

And moving on from these industries are sovereign wealth funds (SWF),  Below is a press release about the latest news in the SWF industry in NZ.

New Zealand Superannuation Fund CEO Adrian Orr received the "Outstanding Contribution to Finance and Business Award" at last night's 2017 NZ CFO Awards in Auckland, New Zealand.

Mr Orr was selected to receive the award by Judges Jonathan Mason (former CFO of Fonterra), David Stewart (Foodstuffs North Island General Manager of Merchandise), and Independent Director Julia Hoare.

The "Outstanding Contribution to Finance & Business Award", sponsored by Stellar Consulting, is given to a high profile business person from a public or private company whose contribution has significantly and uniquely impacted the greater New Zealand or global business community in a financial sense over the course of his or her career.

The judges said Mr Orr's contribution and influence not only as CEO of the NZ Super Fund but also through previous roles with the Reserve Bank of NZ, NZ Treasury and as Chief Economist of both Westpac NZ and The National Bank of NZ, deserved recognition by his peers in the New Zealand finance and business community.

Previous winners of the Award include well-known businesspeople Chris Liddell, Sir John Buchanan, Dr Murray Horn, Sir John Anderson, Jan Dawson and Roger France.

Mr Orr has been CEO of the New Zealand Superannuation Fund since 2007.  He is also the Chair of the International Forum of Sovereign Wealth Funds and Chair of the Pacific Pension and Investment Institute.

In 2015 the New Zealand Superannuation Fund was named the world's best performing sovereign wealth fund by JP Morgan.

The Fund, which aims to help pre-fund rising universal pension costs in New Zealand, stands at $34 billion. It has returned 10% p.a. since inception in 2003, including 23.14% in the 12 months to end February 2017 (after costs, before NZ tax).
